SEO - Building a Successful Website

Thinking of staring a new webpage? Here are six steps for building a successful website:

1. Content
Before we can talk about publishing, build at least 50-100 pages of quality original content. Come up with textual content that is unique and people would be interested in reading. Filter out anything superfluous like "Welcome to my Website."

2. Domain
Come up with an original domain name that is relatively short. Avoid stuff like www.mykeyword.com.

3. Hosting
Find a host which suits your needs and will allow you to expand in terms of bandwidth. Do not overlook this step, in the worst case consider getting a cheap host. Many of them charge less than $6 per month including a free domain.

4. Website Structure
Organize your content into logical sections. Each major section should concentrate on one of your main keywords. The deeper you browse into your website, the more specific the pages should become. Keep each page less than 600-800 words. Too much text is bad for spiders and difficult to handle by surfers. Surfers browse while "scanning" and looking for specific info. They rarely read an entire page full of text.

5. Design
The simpler, the better. Ideally, it should reflect your subject. Build functional menus and keep the links on each page as few as possible. Avoid unnecessary JavaScript, Flash or animated GIFs unless they are useful/helpful to your visitors.

6. Maintenance
Regularly add new content. If you add one new page per day, you will eventually dominate in search engines. Remember, the best content is original content.
