What Not To Do As a Webmaster

Are you a sophisticated webmaster or a newbie? Check to see if you are plagued by any of the seven worst webmaster habits:

1. Pop-ups and Pop-Unders
Stuffing ads in the face of your visitors ensures getting them upset. Unless your site offers something they can't find elsewhere you can be sure they will never return.

2. Intro / Enter Here
Why would you tell your visitor to "enter here" if he is already at your website? 99% of the time, intros are pointless. Unless your website is about flash animation or something artsy, avoid adding elaborate introductions.

3. Hot Linking
Leeching or linking directly to external websites for any type of content is horrible. It is unethical, unpractical and shows that you, the webmaster, are not serious enough about your own content.

4. Banner Exchange
Aestetically bad way of sharing traffic. It is usually employed by low quality websites that exchange little traffic. Keep in mind that having more than one banner per page is usually excessive.

5. Toplists
Toplists and "vote for me" signs are a definite no-no. Such programs always include external code and images which slows and distracts your average visitor.

6. Multimedia
Background music, flashing GIF images, Java, JavaScript or Flash animations are all signs of bad web design. Unless they make your website easier or better to navigate, remove them. Also keep in mind the compatibility issues: what would happened to Google if their site relied solely on Flash?

7. Typographic Murder
Centering all of your text is not a good idea, especially when there is a lot of it. Using a random variety of colors is also not recommended. Loads of plain text are difficult to follow. Develop a clear hierarchy of organization on every page featuring a headline, bodytext and so on.
